Best National Parks for Wildlife Safaris in Uganda and Rwanda

Best National Parks for Wildlife Safaris in Uganda and Rwanda

Uganda and Rwanda are two of Africa’s most underrated safari destinations — countries where extraordinary wildlife encounters, breathtaking landscapes, and genuine wilderness experiences await travelers willing to look beyond the more famous East African safari circuits of Kenya and Tanzania. Between them, Uganda and Rwanda protect some of the continent’s most biodiverse ecosystems, from ancient montane rainforests and equatorial savannah to volcanic highlands and vast papyrus wetlands.

At the heart of both countries’ wildlife offering are their national parks — carefully protected areas where mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions, forest elephants, shoebill storks, golden monkeys, and hundreds of other species live freely in habitats that have survived relatively intact despite the pressures of a rapidly growing human population surrounding them. Each park has its own distinct character, its own flagship species, and its own version of the wild African encounter.

At All Budget Safaris, we design safari itineraries across all of Uganda and Rwanda’s finest national parks — pairing gorilla trekking experiences with game drives, boat safaris, primate walks, and cultural encounters to create journeys of extraordinary breadth and depth. This guide covers the best national parks in both countries, what makes each one special, and how to incorporate them into your perfect East Africa safari itinerary.

Uganda’s Best National Parks for Wildlife Safaris

Uganda’s national parks span an exceptional range of ecosystems — from the ancient rainforests of the southwest to the open savannah floodplains of the north and the volcanic highlands of the Kigezi region. No single park defines Uganda’s wildlife offering; rather, the country’s safari magic emerges from the combination of multiple distinct parks and habitats encountered across a single journey.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Without question Uganda’s most famous and most visited national park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the global epicenter of mountain gorilla conservation and trekking. A UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Uganda’s southwestern Kigezi Highlands, Bwindi covers 321 square kilometers of ancient montane and lowland rainforest — one of the oldest forests in Africa, surviving the last Ice Age as a glacial refuge and emerging with a biodiversity that is extraordinary even by African standards.

Bwindi is home to approximately 500 mountain gorillas — more than half of the world’s entire mountain gorilla population — spread across 23 habituated families available for trekking in four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. But Bwindi is far more than just gorillas. The park supports over 120 mammal species, more than 350 bird species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics, and an astonishing diversity of plants, insects, and amphibians that reflect its ancient ecological heritage.

Flagship experiences: Mountain gorilla trekking, Batwa cultural trail, forest birding, community walks Best time to visit: Year-round; June–September and December–February for drier conditions

Our 3 Days Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Safari is our most popular Uganda gorilla package, offering an immersive Bwindi experience with well-selected accommodation across all budget levels.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Uganda’s most biodiverse game reserve, Queen Elizabeth National Park straddles the equator in western Uganda and is one of East Africa’s most rewarding multi-habitat wildlife destinations. Covering 1,978 square kilometers of savannah, forest, wetland, volcanic crater lakes, and the remarkable Kazinga Channel — a 32-kilometer natural waterway connecting Lakes George and Edward — Queen Elizabeth supports an extraordinary variety of wildlife in an equally varied landscape.

The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector in the south — a rare and iconic behavior unique to this population, where lions regularly rest and survey their territory from the branches of large fig trees. Beyond the lions, Queen Elizabeth is home to leopards, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, Uganda kob, warthogs, topis, and over 600 bird species — one of the highest bird species counts of any park in Africa.

The Kazinga Channel boat cruise is one of Uganda’s unmissable wildlife experiences — gliding past hippo pods of extraordinary density, Nile crocodiles basking on sandy banks, and waterbirds including the extraordinary shoebill stork at extremely close range. The combination of game drive and boat cruise in a single park gives Queen Elizabeth a wildlife variety that few African parks can match.

Flagship experiences: Game drives, Kazinga Channel boat cruise, Ishasha tree-climbing lions, birding, chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge Best time to visit: June–September and December–February for drier game drive conditions

Our 3 Days Safari to Queen Elizabeth NP delivers the full Queen Elizabeth experience — game drives, boat cruise, and Ishasha tree-climbing lions — and pairs perfectly as a complement to any Bwindi gorilla trekking package.

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda’s largest and most visited game reserve, Murchison Falls National Park covers 3,840 square kilometers of savannah, riverine forest, and Nile delta wetlands in Uganda’s northwest — and is anchored by one of the natural world’s most awe-inspiring spectacles: Murchison Falls, where the entire volume of the Victoria Nile is compressed through a seven-meter gap in the rocks to create the world’s most powerful waterfall in a thundering, mist-shrouded explosion of water and light.

The park supports large populations of lions, leopards, elephants, Rothschild’s giraffes — one of the world’s rarest giraffe subspecies — buffaloes, hippos, and Nile crocodiles. The Nile boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls is one of Uganda’s finest wildlife experiences — the riverbanks literally teem with hippos and crocodiles, and the approach to the falls is one of Africa’s great dramatic wildlife moments.

North of the Nile, the savannah sectors offer excellent big game viewing in open grassland landscapes, while south of the river, the Budongo Forest provides excellent chimpanzee trekking — making Murchison one of Uganda’s few parks where both big game and primate encounters are available in a single visit.

Flagship experiences: Game drives, Nile boat cruise to Murchison Falls, chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest, Rothschild’s giraffe sightings Best time to visit: December–February and June–August for optimal game viewing

Our 2 Days Safari to Murchison Falls is an excellent compact Murchison extension for any Uganda safari itinerary.

Kibale Forest National Park

Often overlooked in favour of Uganda’s better-known gorilla and game drive parks, Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda is arguably East Africa’s finest primate destination — and one of the world’s most important tropical forest conservation areas. Covering 795 square kilometers of tropical rainforest and grassland, Kibale harbors the world’s highest density of primates, including an estimated 1,500 chimpanzees — the largest habituated chimp population on Earth.

Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale is an electrifying wildlife experience. The chimps of Kibale are among the most well-studied and extensively habituated in Africa, and encounters with them — watching the community groom, feed, vocalize, and traverse the canopy at breathtaking speed — are profound and memorable. Beyond chimpanzees, Kibale supports twelve other primate species including red colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, olive baboons, and grey-cheeked mangabeys.

The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary on Kibale’s boundary is one of Uganda’s premier birding sites and a successful community conservation initiative — offering guided wetland walks rich in primates, birds, and wetland wildlife.

Flagship experiences: Chimpanzee tracking, primate walks, Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary birding, forest nature walks Best time to visit: Year-round; June–August and December–February for drier conditions

Our 3 Days Chimpanzee Safari in Uganda is a dedicated Kibale chimpanzee experience, while our 5 Days Uganda Primates Safari combines Kibale’s chimpanzee tracking with Bwindi gorilla trekking in a single outstanding Uganda primate itinerary.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Uganda’s smallest national park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits on the slopes of three ancient Virunga volcanoes — Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo — in Uganda’s far southwest, forming part of the transboundary Virunga Conservation Area shared with Rwanda and the DRC. Despite its small size at just 33.7 square kilometers, Mgahinga offers two extraordinary primate experiences: mountain gorilla trekking and golden monkey trekking.

Golden monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti) are endemic to the Virunga volcanic region and are among Africa’s most visually spectacular primates — their vivid golden-orange flanks and black caps catching the bamboo forest light as they move in boisterous, fast-moving troops. Trekking with them is joyful, photogenic, and far less physically demanding than gorilla trekking — making Mgahinga an excellent destination for families and travelers seeking a gentler primate encounter alongside the gorilla experience.

Flagship experiences: Mountain gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking, volcano hiking Best time to visit: June–September and December–February

Our 5 Days Uganda Big Five Safari incorporates Mgahinga alongside Uganda’s broader safari circuit, while our specialist gorilla and golden monkey packages make excellent use of this compact but extraordinary park.

Rwanda’s Best National Parks for Wildlife Safaris

Rwanda’s national parks are fewer in number than Uganda’s but no less extraordinary — each protecting a distinct and globally significant habitat, from volcanic gorilla forest to ancient rainforest and open savannah. Together they create a compact but remarkably complete wildlife safari destination that can be explored comprehensively within a single week.

Explore the full range of Rwanda’s national park experiences on our dedicated Rwanda destination page.

Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda’s crown jewel and one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations, Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan portion of the Virunga Massif — five ancient volcanoes draped in bamboo forest, hagenia woodland, and open moorland along the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC. The park covers 160 square kilometers and is home to ten habituated mountain gorilla families available for trekking, making it one of only two accessible gorilla trekking destinations in the world alongside Uganda’s Bwindi.

Beyond gorillas, Volcanoes offers golden monkey trekking — an excellent complement to the gorilla experience — as well as volcano hiking to the summits of Bisoke and Karisimbi, and visits to the legendary Karisoke Research Centre established by Dian Fossey. The park’s dramatic volcanic skyline, misty forest atmosphere, and extraordinary conservation history make it one of Africa’s most emotionally compelling wildlife destinations.

Flagship experiences: Mountain gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking, volcano hiking, Dian Fossey tomb visit Best time to visit: June–September and December–February

Our 3 Days Gorilla Safari in Volcanoes NP is Rwanda’s most popular gorilla package, and our 5 Days Rwanda Primate Safari combines Volcanoes with Rwanda’s other outstanding primate parks.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

One of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse montane rainforests, Nyungwe Forest National Park in southwestern Rwanda covers over 1,000 square kilometers of ancient highland forest that has remained largely intact for millions of years. Nyungwe is home to an estimated 500 chimpanzees — one of the continent’s most significant wild chimpanzee populations — as well as thirteen other primate species, over 300 bird species, and a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna.

The park’s famous canopy walkway — a suspension bridge strung high above the forest floor — offers a thrilling aerial perspective on the forest ecosystem and is one of Rwanda’s most exciting non-primate experiences. Colobus monkey troops in their thousands are regularly seen crossing forest clearings in spectacular black-and-white cascades, making Nyungwe’s primate walks among the most visually dramatic in Africa.

Flagship experiences: Chimpanzee tracking, canopy walkway, colobus monkey walks, birding Best time to visit: June–September for drier trekking conditions

Our 3 Days Best of Nyungwe National Park is a dedicated Nyungwe experience covering chimpanzees, canopy walks, and primate diversity in a beautifully structured three-day itinerary.

Akagera National Park

Rwanda’s only savannah national park and one of Africa’s great conservation comeback stories, Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda borders Tanzania along the Akagera River and covers 1,122 square kilometers of rolling savannah, woodland, and a complex of lakes and papyrus wetlands that support exceptional bird diversity alongside classic East African big game.

Once devastated by poaching and agricultural encroachment, Akagera has been dramatically transformed over the past fifteen years under joint management between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, black rhinos followed in 2017, and the park’s wildlife populations — elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, hippos, leopards, and hyenas — have surged remarkably. Today Akagera offers Rwanda’s only genuine Big Five game drive experience in a park that combines excellent wildlife viewing with extraordinary lakeside scenery.

Flagship experiences: Big Five game drives, boat safaris on Lake Ihema, bird watching, night game drives Best time to visit: June–September for optimal game viewing in lower vegetation

Our 2 Days of Akagera National Park delivers Rwanda’s best Big Five wildlife experience in a focused two-day format, perfect as an Akagera extension within any Rwanda safari itinerary.
