Arusha National Park

Destination Overview

Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and diverse wildlife destinations, located just 35 kilometers northeast of the city of Arusha at the base of Mount Meru. Covering approximately 137 square kilometers, the park encompasses a variety of habitats including open savannahs, montane forests, alpine meadows, volcanic craters, and the shores of Momella Lakes. Its compact size and scenic diversity make it an ideal destination for short safaris, trekking, and birdwatching.

Established in 1960, Arusha National Park is known for its spectacular landscapes, moderate trekking opportunities, and abundant wildlife, offering a mix of adventure and classic safari experiences.

Mount Meru and Scenic Landscapes

At the heart of the park rises Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,562 meters. Its snow-capped peak, volcanic slopes, and surrounding forests dominate the park’s landscape. The park also includes the Ngurdoto Crater, a dramatic volcanic caldera with seasonal marshes and grasslands, providing unique vistas and wildlife habitats.

The Momella Lakes, a series of small alkaline lakes, are scattered across the eastern plains and are famous for attracting large flocks of flamingos and other waterbirds, creating stunning photographic opportunities.

Wildlife and Game Viewing

Despite its relatively small size, Arusha National Park supports a variety of wildlife. Visitors can spot giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, elephants, and elands in the open savannah and crater areas. Predators such as leopards and hyenas are present but elusive.

The park’s forests and montane zones provide habitats for colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and other primates, adding diversity to wildlife encounters. Hippos can often be seen in the Momella Lakes and along the rivers.

Birdlife and Biodiversity

Arusha National Park is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 400 species recorded. Its varied habitats—from wetlands and lakes to montane forests and grasslands—support resident and migratory species.

Bird species commonly seen include flamingos, pelicans, herons, storks, weavers, hornbills, sunbirds, and kingfishers. The Momella Lakes, in particular, are excellent for observing large congregations of waterbirds.

Trekking, Hiking, and Adventure Activities

Arusha National Park offers a variety of outdoor activities that go beyond traditional game drives:

Mount Meru Trekking – Moderate hikes lead to viewpoints and up to the saddle of Mount Meru, offering panoramic views of the surrounding plains and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Ngurdoto Crater Walks – Guided walks through the crater floor and rim reveal wildlife, plant diversity, and geological features.

Momella Lakes Exploration – Birdwatching and scenic walks around the alkaline lakes offer peaceful wildlife encounters.

Photography – The combination of mountains, craters, lakes, and wildlife creates an ideal environment for capturing stunning images.

Scenic Highlights

The park’s dramatic landscapes include misty montane forests, volcanic craters, rolling savannahs, and the reflective surfaces of Momella Lakes. The Ngurdoto Crater is often called “Little Serengeti” due to its grassy plains and concentration of wildlife, while Mount Meru dominates the skyline with its volcanic majesty.

Best Time to Visit Arusha National Park

Arusha National Park can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons from June to October and January to February are ideal for trekking, wildlife viewing, and road accessibility.

The rainy seasons bring lush vegetation, full lakes, and excellent birdwatching, though trails may be slippery and some areas harder to access.

Accessibility and Safari Combinations

Arusha National Park is the most accessible park from the city of Arusha, making it suitable for day trips or overnight excursions. It is often included in northern Tanzania safari circuits along with Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, and Serengeti National Park.

Its proximity to Arusha International Airport and nearby lodges makes it convenient for travelers seeking a quick yet rewarding wildlife and adventure experience.
