Tour Overview
Early Morning Departure from Kigali
Your day begins very early with a pick-up from your hotel or residence in Kigali, usually around 3:00–4:00 am. The drive heads north and west through Rwanda’s rolling hills toward the Cyanika or Katuna border. The journey is scenic and relatively smooth, taking approximately 4–5 hours depending on border formalities. An early departure ensures you arrive in Bwindi on time for the mandatory gorilla trekking briefing.
Border Crossing and Transfer to Bwindi
At the Rwanda–Uganda border, your guide assists with immigration procedures, including passport checks and visa requirements. Once cleared, you continue through Kisoro and into the lush, forested highlands surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The change in landscape is dramatic, with misty hills, terraced farmlands, and dense rainforest setting the stage for your gorilla experience.
Gorilla Trekking Experience
Upon arrival at the park headquarters, you join other trekkers for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You are assigned a gorilla family based on fitness level and group size before heading into the forest. The trek can last anywhere from 1 to 4 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. Once you find them, you spend a magical one hour observing their behavior, interactions, and daily life at close range. This intimate encounter is the highlight of the safari and one of Africa’s most profound wildlife experiences.
Lunch and Return Journey
After the trek, you return to the park headquarters to receive a trekking certificate, then enjoy a packed lunch or a quick meal at a nearby lodge. Shortly after, you begin the drive back toward the Uganda–Rwanda border and continue on to Kigali. Although it is a long day, the experience of seeing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat makes it incredibly worthwhile.
Arrival Back in Kigali
You arrive back in Kigali in the late evening, where you are dropped off at your hotel or at Kigali International Airport for a late-night flight, if required. Despite being a single-day trip, this safari delivers a complete and deeply memorable gorilla trekking experience.
Tour Plan
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha, Tanzania
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by your safari representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. This vibrant town sits at the base of Mount Meru and is the gateway to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit.
You will receive a briefing about your upcoming adventure and have time to relax after your journey. Overnight stay in Arusha.
Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, depart for Tarangire National Park, famous for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab trees. The park’s landscapes include open savannah, seasonal swamps, and the Tarangire River, which attracts wildlife year-round.
Enjoy a full game drive where you may spot elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and numerous bird species. In the late afternoon, transfer to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Tarangire to Ngorongoro Highlands
After a morning game drive or relaxed breakfast, depart for the lush Ngorongoro Highlands. Along the way, you’ll pass local villages and scenic farmland.
Arrive at your lodge set on the crater rim or nearby highlands, offering cool air and beautiful views. Spend the afternoon at leisure, preparing for the crater safari the next day.
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Safari
Today you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s most wildlife-dense areas. The crater floor is home to lions, elephants, buffaloes, hyenas, hippos, flamingos, and the rare black rhino.
Enjoy a picnic lunch near a hippo pool before continuing your game drive. In the afternoon, ascend back to the rim and transfer to the Serengeti area for overnight (or stay another night near Ngorongoro depending on lodge location).
Day 5: Ngorongoro / Central Serengeti
After breakfast, drive into Serengeti National Park, Tanzania’s most famous wildlife destination. The endless plains are home to massive herds of wildebeest and zebras, as well as predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards.
Enjoy an afternoon game drive en route to your lodge or camp in Central Serengeti, a prime wildlife-viewing area year-round.
Day 6: Full Day in Serengeti National Park
Spend a full day exploring the Serengeti with morning and afternoon game drives. Depending on the season, you may witness part of the Great Migration, with thousands of animals moving across the plains in search of fresh grazing.
Your guide will track wildlife hotspots, giving you excellent chances to see big cats and other iconic African animals. Overnight in Serengeti.
Day 7: Serengeti to Kenya (Masai Mara)
After an early breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive as you head toward the Isebania border between Tanzania and Kenya. After border formalities and meeting your Kenyan guide, continue to the Masai Mara National Reserve.
Arrive at your lodge or camp in the late afternoon. If time allows, enjoy a short evening game drive. Dinner and overnight in Masai Mara.
Day 8: Full Day in Masai Mara
Today is dedicated to exploring the Masai Mara, one of Africa’s richest wildlife reserves. The Mara is the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem and is famous for the Great Migration river crossings (seasonal) and high predator populations.
Enjoy extensive game drives across rolling grasslands dotted with acacia trees. Expect to see lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and possibly cheetahs or leopards. Picnic lunch in the reserve and overnight at your lodge or camp.
Day 9: Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast, depart the Masai Mara and drive through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park. The park is well known for its rhino sanctuary and scenic lake surrounded by woodland and grassland.
Enjoy an afternoon game drive where you may see white and black rhinos, Rothschild giraffes, lions, and a variety of birdlife. Overnight near Lake Nakuru.
Day 10: Lake Nakuru to Amboseli National Park
After breakfast, depart for Amboseli National Park, located near the Kenya–Tanzania border and famous for its large elephant herds and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Arrive in time for an afternoon game drive. The park’s open plains and swamps provide excellent wildlife viewing and photography opportunities. Dinner and overnight in Amboseli.
Day 11: Amboseli to Nairobi – Departure
Enjoy an early morning game drive in Amboseli, when wildlife is most active and the views of Mount Kilimanjaro are often clearest. After breakfast, begin your drive to Nairobi.
Arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon, where you will be dropped off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your incredible East African safari adventure.
