Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park
The safari begins with an early morning departure from Kigali, heading southwest toward Nyungwe. The drive passes scenic tea plantations, rolling hills, and traditional Rwandan villages. Upon arrival, you check in to your lodge near the park. In the afternoon, you can enjoy a short forest hike or simply relax at the lodge while taking in the serene rainforest surroundings. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk
After an early breakfast, you head to the park headquarters for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking. Guided by experienced rangers, you trek through the dense forest in search of a habituated chimpanzee group. The trek can last between one and four hours depending on the chimpanzees’ location. Once found, you spend one hour observing their behavior and interactions.
In the afternoon, you take the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walk, suspended high above the forest floor. This 90-meter-long walkway offers panoramic views of the rainforest, birdlife, and the surrounding hills. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Nature Walks, Birding, and Return Transfer
On the final day, enjoy an early morning nature walk or guided birding tour to spot some of Nyungwe’s 300+ bird species. You may also encounter other primates, including black-and-white colobus monkeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys. After the morning activity, you return to the lodge for breakfast and begin the drive back to Kigali, with lunch en route, arriving in the late afternoon or evening.
